A Different Kind of Market Update

by Domain Property Agents, October 27, 2016

Despite auction clearance rates reaching their highest point this year, the biggest news in property this month had nothing to do with houses and everything to do with the humble avocado.

An opinion piece about smashed avocados by popular demographer and self-professed ‘Middle-Aged Moraliser,’ Bernard Salt, pushed more than a few buttons when the author suggested that Millennials should spend more time saving and less time eating smashed avocado toast if they wanted to get ahead in real estate.

“I have seen young people order smashed avocado with crumbled feta on five-grain toasted bread at $22 a pop and more,” he wrote.

“I can afford to eat this for lunch because I am middle-aged and have raised my family. But how can young people afford to eat like this?”

While we respectfully disagree with Mr. Salt’s take on the property market, we know for a fact that Millennials are some of the best savers going, we do think he’s onto something when it comes to great brunch or breakfast ideas.

So, we’ve found a fresh take on the avocado on toast brekky solution. See the recipe below:

Avocado and Egg Breakfast Pizza

Serves 4

1 large avocado
1 tablespoon finely chopped coriander
1 1/2 teaspoons lime juice
1/8 teaspoon salt
Pita bread for 4

4 large eggs
1 tablespoon olive oil

Hot sauce optional

Method:

Cut the avocado in half lengthwise, remove the pit and, with a large spoon, scoop the flesh into a medium bowl. Add the coriander, lime juice, and salt. Mash with a fork until smooth, with a few chunks of avocado. Set aside.

Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces. On a well-floured cutting board, roll each piece into a thin 6-inch circle.

Heat a well-seasoned cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat until hot. Place one of the pita circles in the center of the skillet. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes, until the underside is browned and the top surface is bubbly. Flip and cook the other side until browned. Transfer to a plate and repeat with remaining dough.

Spread 1/4 of the avocado mixture onto each cooked piece of dough.

Heat the oil in a skillet over medium heat. Fry eggs to desired amount and place each one on top of a pizza. Serve immediately, with or without a drizzle of hot sauce.
